First Post of the Year...

…and hopefully the start of a new series of reports.

I recently gained a new flatmate, an American girl. She however strangely knows very very little about the world of Wrestling. (Maybe me being an obsessed fan from the UK believe for some reason that everyone from USA has some knowledge on the subject, even though the ratings are in fact garbage these days and nothing compared to what they were in the past with the lowest amount of people watching RAW at the moment since the Monday Night Wars… but anyway) So I have started the process of indoctrination…(why does that sound so creepy?)

She was watching me play WWE ‘12 the past couple of days and asked many questions about it. But she seemed rather shocked when I pulled back the curtain and revealed that its pre-determined all the way through. But considering she has never watched a match that is hardly surprising.

The best start I thought I could give would be a good all round show. and the best one of those that I have on DVD or Blu-Ray with me at our flat is the Blu-Ray of Wrestlemania 24. It would introduce almost all of the important characters of today, and there is some great action and historic moments.

Currently we have seen the Nature Boy retire, A very different CM Punk win his first MITB, and a very young looking Randy Orton retain his title against the odds of HHH and Cena.

She did seem to gravitate towards Cena. (Mostly due to him being a from Mass, where she went to Uni.)

She very much so far sees it all in black and white terms. always asking who is the “good guy” and who is the “bad guy”. I think this is how all fans start, I know i was devastated when HHH regained the title from my hero The Rock in the summer of 2000, and I never ever cheered heels, even entertaining ones! I almost felt guilty about liking a certain sneaky Latino Heat at the time.

Anyway, any suggestions about things to watch to help introduce different aspects of wrestling?

Sure, it’s got “wrestling” embedded somewhere in its acronymic title, but WWE ‘12 acts like a fighting game. In pro wrestling, the “other guy” in a match takes bumps, and helps dictate the pace of the bout. The video game versions of wrestling don’t include blatant options to take falls. There is no intentional means of losing to give a low-card wrestler a “push.”

Just a few of many reasons why making a wrestling game like a fighting game makes it a poor wrestling game.

But what is the market for a Wrestling Game? How many smart fans would want to participate in the wrestling process, how many smart fans are in the video game playing wrestling fan market, and how many wrestling fans are there in the video game world as it is?

Creating a AAA title with a large team and budget requires publishers and producers to take minimum-risk, maximum-reward to keep the company floating on the tumultuous seas of the industry. This is where Indie developers come in. Freedom to dictate pricing points and delivery methods provides a more fluid production timeline, more choices to maximise demographic interests and ultimately innovate in the industry where the AAA could not.

Creating an Indie Wrestling Game is not a case of technology, so it’s within our reach. It’s just a case of finding a company that has the man-power, the artistic ability and the wrestling knowledge to make this game happen. Odds are slim. To make it good? Odds are minuscule.

Fuck it, I’ll just have to do it myself. See you in a year.

Right. this has not been the best week I’ve ever had. Started out great with Rock wrestling, Punk winning the title etc, but quickly soured.

Writing a Proposal Document for a dissertation is horrid. There is No Buys to it!
I had tickets for me and one of my best friends to go down to Glasgow and see Frank Turner, one of my favourite artists of the moment…But illness took the partner away, and its a fair amount of money to go by one’s lonesome to a gig, so i decided not to go. Tickets still lying in my drawer…
I decide to cheer myself up buy buying WWE ‘12 on amazon’s black friday sales for £26.99 an incredible bargain on day one!
It arrived this morning, and I played it for about 3 hours. Its awesome, huge improvement gameplay wise, looks loads better, and the AI is actually a challenge! All good right?…..WRONG!
My PS3 seizes up, has a heart attack and goes into Yellow Light Of Doom mode… Wont even turn on anymore, and will not give me my disc back. FUUUUU!
This is the third time it has done this in 6 months. All starting with LA Noire, which still doesn’t run on my launch system!
At least i’m covered by SKP repair in Dundee, a great store that does one day repairs in PS3 and 360 hardware. If it happens again though I may just have to grab a slim. I have had this old box for 4 and a half years now!

Some quick thoughts:

Dolph Ziggler is awesome. Hope he gets bumped up the card soon. A strong “Perfect-like” performance in the Rumble perhaps?
Zack Ryder should have won the title last night, don’t think he will find as perfect a crowd as last night for a while. I just hope they notice how over he really is/
Poor JoMo… Last year had one the best ladder matches I’ve ever seen with Sheamus. Thought for sure he would get a World title run this year. If this is his last hurah at least he is making Ziggler look a million bucks. Gonna have to make it happen in WWE ‘12.

Hell of a finish for Eve to take, she continues to impress. Does however feel like the division needs something new, really just treading water till Kharmageddon!

Poor Sin Cara… This guy just isn’t getting any breaks. No Wrestlemania in his debut year sucks. At this rate Mysterio will be back and injured again by the time Cara returns. They may never get the dream feud…
Cody Rhodes is great, love how Orton was testing the crowds devotion to him, he knows how important the next couple of months will be for Cody. Cody needs to win the WWE title soon and get rid of the spinner as well!
Wade Barrett will be the first UK World Champion at this rate. The man oozes smug thug. Man it hurts not being able to say that about Drew McIntyre….

Show’s elbow was dare-I-say-it better than Punk’s in his match. Great spot and more heat goes on the Henry train. Was very much expecting a Kane/Undertaker return/tease of some kind. Will be interesting how they get to TLC. However a chairs match will not be as cool as those two in a tables or ladder match!

CM Punk - NEEEEEEEEEEW WWE Champion. As announced by Howard Finkle, at the 25th Survivor Series. In Madison Square Garden. Does it get any better?
Feels like they could go many ways, felt like a story end/new begining. A couple of months defences against Ziggler/Swagger while they re-build del Rio into the killer he was last year would be awesome, however I can see this just being the middle of del Rio and Punk’s feud. Hopefully the title doesn’t change hands for the 11th time this year!

Rock really is the most charismatic man in sports entertainment. Really doesn’t need saying but he is. Just needs to turn his head to get 20,000 people behind him. It’s kinda scary.
He was crisp as ever, faster at 39 than at 29, and looked absolutely huge. Didn’t even seem to miss a beat. Even broke out La Magistral!
It very much felt like a childhood flashback, loved even the little things like how his selling/woozy walk away after a punch is as ridiculous as ever.
Truth really is great as the crazy heel. Has a something heels have lacked in WWE in a while.
Miz is still tone/rhythm deaf as ever, but would we have him any other way? I bet he had a good day, sold out MSG and wrestled The Rock, easily his biggest inspiration!
After a few weeks of feeling super down on WWE (RAW mostly) It suddenly feels like the next few months to Wrestlemania are going to be good. Good work WWE!

It’s like he’s actively trying to force the WWE to turn him face. Far, far, far too charismatic. Get his ass on commentary, he did a great job on FCW.

But this gif of AJ trying to levitate Tamina with her fans because she was dressed as Kitana from Mortal Kombat is possibly the best fucking thing I’ve seen in a WWE ring all year, seriously.

AJ really is the gimmick she plays on screen, or at least seems it, and I love it because it’s just so glorious

WOW, that is awesome! She should just become a CHIKARA style video game tribute character now!

The Undertaker

There is no one quite like the Deadman is there? No one garners as much respect and admiration. No one garners a reaction like he gets on a consistent basis, or has the matches like he does. He is someone who in the last 5 years has become an absolute legend unlike any other character in Wrestling. His gimmick is quite possibly the best ever thanks to the evolutions he has taken and to the kayfabe he to this day upholds. Wrestlemania is his event much more now than anyone else, and the last few years with the Streak storyline they have produced some of the best angles and matches I have ever seen. Somehow this giant of a man garners more sympathy when fighting uphill battles than John Cena ever has. His “mystical powers” only embellish a character that means so much to the WWE Universe. I do not believe that the streak should ever be beaten now. If Triple H, Shawn Michaels and Kane all couldn’t do it twice, then no one should. It means more than any title in the WWE and will be his lasting legacy for the rest of wrestling history. As a fan I care about this almost more than any other story in the WWE and it is really the only match (MITB 2011 notwithstanding this year) every year that gets me out of my seat and marking out like the kid I once was. For that alone I must give this to Undertaker. The best consistent hero WWE has probably ever produced.

PS. Other notables up for this in my list were: Sting (a close second), The Rock, Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels

Day 13 - Name who you think makes the best heel, and why?

Edge

I think Edge has been the best modern heel in wrestling. His character from 2005 - 2009 was one of the best WWE have produced, the idea being that the character has no redeeming moral features. He was a bad guy through and through. He was the one that got the fans cheering Cena again after Cena’s first title reign, and the feuds between the two produced some outstanding matches. Then his feud with Undertaker was epic in scope and even fooled me for a couple of seconds that the Wrestlemania match between the two might end with Edge shattering the streak. To even get that sort of a rise out of die hard fans speaks volumes to how good he really was. The man ruled Smackdown and his retirement is kind of responsible to the craziness that has been the WWE since April. Losing such a star on Smackdown derailed Alberto Del Rio’s destiny, helped Christian gain two world titles, started the RAW SuperShows, and led to the rise of Mark Henry~!

I’m glad he could go out as a face after such a prolonged period of being a heel. If anyone deserved a great retirement with his head held high, it’s him.

Honourable mentions for this title are: CM Punk, Ric Flair and the Four Horsemen, Triple H and Michael Cole

Ok, I slipped behind and need to get back on track, sorry for the flood of posts about to come….

Day 12 - Name your first favourite wrestler and the reasons why.

The Rock.

I became the huge fan of wrestling that I am really in the year 2000. Channel 4 in the UK, one of only 5 Channels I had at the time had just gotten the contract to show Sunday Night Heat and every second WWE PPV on free tv (on a time delay of an hour and cut up for ad breaks) I remember getting my father to tape the first one. Royal Rumble 2000. What a first full ppv to watch eh? The Hardy’s(z) and Dudley’s(z) made history in the first ever Tag Table match, the Miss Rumble swimsuit contest did irreparable damage to my newly turned 9-year-old brain and the Cactus Jack/Triple H street fight is still in my top 25 matches of all time.

However there was one man that stood above them all that night, he won the rumble (under dubious means as we would later find out) and started his path to Wrestlemania (or in this years case, Backlash) The one called the People’s Champion. The Great One, The Rock.

I had been a distant wrestling fan for a while, unable to see anything thanks to WWE’s exclusivity to Sky, and in an age where my family didn’t even have a computer! Second hand reports from school friends was all I went on! However The Rock made such an impression with one night, a blistering promo followed by a great performance in front of a red hot crowd at MSG. I was a fan for life thereafter!

I am very eager to see Survivor Series with the return of the great one to the squared circle as a competitor. Hopefully he shines up the people’s boot turns it sideways and sticks it straight up Cena’s ass as soon as they win!

Kelly Kelly.

Now I don’t have a particular dislike for Kelly like some online, I enjoy that she is a face who looks like they are very much enjoying being in front of the fans and she has earned a run with the Diva’s title much more than say the Bella Twins. But thanks to F4WOnline I cannot get away from the fact that she can barely run the ropes! It’s quite distracting and I guess is just a rib by this point. Beth should have won the title 2 weeks ago where she was the most over person on the show, hopefully at Hell in a Cell she gets what belongs to her!

Other Possibilities: Mason Ryan, Jinder Mahal, Titus O’Neil and as I hate to say it both Sin Caras….

Day 10 - Name a superstar that you think needs a serious de-push.

This could go for many characters in WWE including the “Champ” John Cena, someone that doesn’t need the WWE Championship yet he is champion cutting all of the momentum away from Alberto del Rio. but really I have to give this to one man:

Michael Cole

This man has been the worst of the WWE for over a year now. You can’t have the man that need the most credibility and the one that is doing the most hyping of the big shows be a goofy heel that cannot work the proper heel style. Whenever there has been a Heel announcer in the past he always can be put in his place by the heroic babyface announcer. Be it Monsoon and Ventura/Heenan to JR and King back in the day. That is what makes the dynamic work. Cole can never take his place when he has been put down. He comes back with legitimately spiteful remarks both against WWE talent and the other announcers. He has no credibility when talking about angles because we know of his stupid views when it comes to characters like Daniel Bryan. He needs to be written off of the announce table. Make him the Anon RAW GM, Make him a heel manager! they could easily have duplicated the success they have had with Vickie Guerrero - Nuclear Heat! This would fix so many problems with the current WWE product. He is the reason I haven’t watched a full Smackdown in months!
